Airbus A380 flies on alternative fuel
Posted on 15 April 2009 under Alternative Fuel Vehicles by admin
arsenium666 asked:
Test aircraft A380 MSN004 has flown between Filton and Toulouse with one engine powered by alternative fuel. The test, part of Airbus’ research programme into alternative fuels, was run in collaboration with Shell International Petroleum and Rolls Royce. The project is particularly important for environmental and economical reasons. Crude oil derived products are increasingly in demand and prices are rocketing. If it is possible to find a suitable alternative fuel, this could stabilize the …

This GTL fuel technology is currently being used in normal cars, and there are a lot of gas stations here in Europa to refuel this kind of cars: UK, Italy, Portugal are some examples where the introduction of GTL is been SUCCESFUL.
Actualy GTL is 30% cheaper in the Gas Stations I had the opportunity to check its availability.

The problem is a lack of cheap oil, it is becoming vastly more expensive to find and develop fields, in the deep oceans, as oilshale or tarsands etc. Gas isn’t expected to reach peak production until decades after oil. Natural gas, methane, CH4, can be reformulated into various liquid fuels using various processes including Fischer-Tropsch. It is not liquifying the gas, that is LNG. The basic methane molecule is taken apart and put back together as C12H26 or higher chains that make up jet fuel.

I sure hope they use this GTL ( Gas To Liquid) fuel not bio fuel as one said this is when you compress the gas into a liquid (well to my understanding at least) and produces less emissions. For Airbus sake they better use it since this plane holds key to the company’s future due to high cost of fuel these days and if they don’t use it expect sales of this plane to fall which would be a shame to all those who put all their hard work on this plane because Airbus surpass Boeing in my opinion now.

natural gas is a byproduct of crude oil

Yes, but the more important is that it’s an alternative to oil, and even the oil companies themselves start to recognize that oil production is reaching a peak.

Cleaner, safer and more environmental friendly because it does not contain sulphur.

So, this mean Airbus A380 could fly with Bio-fuel in future!
